Why are solar cables so expensive? Whats the different from ordinary cables?

    solar cables

    1.Material cost

Because photovoltaic systems are usually installed outdoors and exposed to harsh environments for a long time. Therefore, the sheath and insulation of solar cables are usually made of materials that are resistant to high and low temperatures, UV rays, ozone and chemical corrosion, such as XLPO materials. These materials is higher than that of ordinary cables. The ordinary cables may be used indoors or in environments that are not exposed to direct UV rays.

The design life of photovoltaic cell modules is 25 years, so solar cables must be designed to have a life of more than 25 years. Therefore, it needs to use more stable and aging-resistant materials to ensure long-term reliability.

    2.Production process

In order to provide the solar cables with heat resistance and aging resistance, the sheath and insulation of the solar cables need to be cross-linked and irradiated. Compared with ordinary cables, solar cables involve higher technical requirements and more rigorous production processes, which increases their production costs.

    3.Standards and certificates

solar cables need to pass international certifications, such as TUV, UL, CQC, etc., and also need to meet specific standards, such as 2PFG 1169/08.07, EN 50618:2014 and UL4703, etc. These standards are designed to ensure the safety of cables under high voltage and extreme environments. The standards for ordinary cables may be relatively loose, resulting in lower costs.

The high cost of solar cables is mainly due to the use of more expensive materials and stricter production standards to ensure that the cables can operate stably and long-term in harsh outdoor environments, providing users with greater long-term value and safety.
